ZAMBIAN CANCER SOCIETY
Formally established in 2009, the Zambian Cancer Society (ZCS) is a non-profit organisation founded by Udie Soko, who is a survivor of 2 cancers. In 1989 at the age of 23 she was diagnosed with early stage cancer of the lymph-nodes and was declared cancer free in 1990. In 2015, a few months before her 50th birthday, Udie was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Udie is currently on hormonal treatment and is responding well.
A Cancer Smart Zambia with MORE birthdays and LESS cancer.
ZCS is a non-profit organisation focusing on information dissemination and supporting those affected by cancer, irrespective of age, gender or type of cancer. By breaking the silence on cancer, we are committed to creating a cancer smart Zambia through health education, community programmes and events.
Through this programme we promote physical activity to help reduce the risk of some cancers such as breast (post-menopausal), colon and rectal. We also use this platform to raise funds through our Active Ambassadors.
Based at the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka, we have created the country’s first cancer information and support desk – aka “Hope Desk”. Our services include information, counselling, patient visitation and follow up.
Through a generous donation from the Rotaract Club of Lusaka, we have supported the establishment of a cancer screening and surveillance clinic for cervical, breast and prostate cancers at the Cancer Diseases Hospital.
