PINKDRIVE (South Africa)
South Africa´s best-loved Breast Cancer Community Carer, PinkDrive NPC is the indispensable, tangible breast cancer organisation powering currently South Africa´s first and only mobile Mammography and Educational Units through our country, driving home the fact that “Early Detection Will Help Prolong A Life”.
PinkDrive currently runs four “Pink” mobile breast check units, as well as nine educational cars. All units travel to semi-urban and urban areas around South Africa with the aim of enabling numerous disadvantaged communities access to diagnostic mammography screening, education, physical examinations and how to do breast self-examination.
The first mobile screening unit successfully launched in the Western Cape in 2011 and operated through local clinics, community health centres and hospitals.
In March 2014, PinkDrive unveiled South Africa´s first Mobile Women´s Cancer Health Unit in the form of a fourteen ton truck. Described as a “Doctor´s Room on Wheels”, the Unit boasts a state-of-the-art gynecological area for pap smears and examinations, a reception area for administration and a radiology area. Two units now address cervical cancer, as well as offering mammograms.
The Mobile Women´s Cancer Health Unit´s are ‘manned’ by qualified and certified radiographers (Mammographers) as well as fully trained cervical cancer nurses. PinkDrive’s initial cancer service’s have further expanded, by collaborating with other like minded organisations, and now offer a comprehensive women’s health service, e.g. HIV AIDS testing, TB testing, Diabetes and cholesterol testing. All these diseases require early intervention, and follow on to PinkDrives motto “early detection will help prolong a life”.
This combination ultimately transforms the Unit into not only a Cancer Powerhouse, but also enables PinkDrive to simultaneously tackle the two most prevalent female cancers – breast and cervical cancer. All the additional services remain free to all medically uninsured women, regardless of where they reside in South Africa.
To date we have provided over 15,000 free mammograms, done over 126,500 clinical breast examinations in community areas, educated over 369,700 women and men in South Africa on the importance of early detection of cancer. We have a targeted approach when addressing social needs. The projects we are involved in are participatory, have building capacity, are sustainable and have measurable impact. Through the goodwill of many fortunate citizens and willing corporate businesses helping us, we in turn are helping government to touch as many citizens as we can.
Our Vision is to provide a free women’s health service to the medically uninsured in South Africa and to advocate for change in the cancer space – even if only 1 truck and 1 province at a time.
Our Mission is to spread the message that “Early Detection Will Help Prolong A Life”.
Integrity. Accountability. Discipline. Passionate Giving. Teamwork. Open Minded.
