What makes us special
  • Marcelle Roberts is the chef/patron of Café 1999.  A vibey café on the Berea.  She has been at café 1999 for 18 years, owning it for 15 with her husband, Sean.
  •  Marcelle studied at Christina Martin, school of food and wine in 1998 and worked in the UK, Channel Islands and Tala Game reserve before settling in Durban.
  • She also owns Unity Brasserie and S43, home to THAT brewing co with her husband where they serve up a more casual fair to suit the beer that is made onsite by brewmaster Paul Ten Hoorn Boer.
  • Unity Bar is situated in the same centre(practically next door to Café 1999) and has become very popular over the years with locals, some frequenting Unity every day.
  • S43 is an extension of our Micro brewery and has an industrial chic feel being in an old factory, it is a popular functions venue and show cases local bands and DJ’s on a regular basis
  • Marcelle has a passion for fresh seasonal ingredients and her less is more philosophy is evident in her cooking.  Café 1999 is well known for its fish and seafood dishes as well as a wide range of vegetarian options.
  • Cafe 1999 offers a dining experience to excite the senses: a vibrant ambiance, gracious service and a delectable menu in the heart of Durban’s trendy Berea. Chef Marcelle Roberts' award-winning contemporary Mediterranean cuisine is designed around sharing.
  • The menu is informed by the seasons using only the finest local and imported ingredients, hand-picked by Marcelle and her team, culminating in fresh and innovative seasonal dishes. Cafe 1999 has been in operation since 1999 and has remained a firm favourite for locals and visitors alike.
  • Found in the heart of Durban's trendy Berea, the restaurant is imbued with a light and vibrant ambiance, with intimate dining outdoors and a convivial atmosphere inside.
  • The wine list is small but there is an extensive list of wines that change all the time to keep things interesting.
  • I am very health conscious and even though eating out is a spoil it doesn’t mean everything has to swim in oil!  Our meals are fresh prepared every day, we make everything from scratch so no processed goodies.  By eating real food I believe you are already on the way to a healthier life!
